Jesus lodged a question to his disciples. Everyone made a guess but not Peter. He was different. Just like the rest he ate and rested with Jesus, listened to him, prayed with Him, served the people with Him, and witnessed His constant wrangling with the religious leaders.
Unlike the rest his association with Jesus provided him a different insight. He saw in Jesus as someone far unique and more special than a prophet, a teacher or a wonder worker. He saw the depth of His mystery: “You are the Messiah.” But Jesus was quick to recognise Peter’s vague understanding of His messianic identity. So he started teaching them about the Son of Man to transform their messianic expectations.
“…Who do you say that I am?” is one question that you and I must face just like the first century disciples did. It requires awareness of how we see Jesus.
We have our share of time with the Lord: dinning at His Eucharistic Table, listening to His Words in Sacred Scriptures, praying with Him, and working with Him in the people we serve. We have devoted and committed our life to Him.
But perhaps we have not gone beyond seeing Him as one we turn to in times of distress, as the miracle worker in our life. Or maybe what we really see is distorted by our own ideas and opinions about who he should be.
The good news is that there is a time of redemption when finally, just like the disciples, by constant enlightenment, we will be blessed with the right knowledge about the mystery of His person. By then we will see Jesus as He is.
