The WORD in Other Words by Fr Jay Francis Flandez SVD (Hongkong)
Wednesday 1st Week of Lent
Signs are important. We need signs to guide and direct us in our earthly journey. In our Churches we see plenty of signs. The crucifix is a sign of God’s love towards humanity. The statues of the saints are signs to remind us that our fundamental vocation is to live a life of holiness and service. When we start our prayer we make the sign of the cross to remind us, that our God is Trinitarian, Father, Son and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus said in today’s gospel, “This generation is an evil generation; it seeks a sign, but no sign will be given it, except the sign of Jonah…” People repented at the preaching of Jonah; they changed their ways and followed the ways of God. The message of the gospel is about repentance and conversion. Jesus is reminding us again in this season of Lent to remember the sign that we received last Ash Wednesday, that as we received the ashes marked on our foreheads we were reminded that we are nothing without God in our lives.
The season of lent is a reminder that God is a loving and merciful God. So let us approach Him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and allow the love and mercy of God to heal us of our lack of faith. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a sign that God will never abandon us, that God will always forgive us because He loves us. –
