The WORD in Other Words by Fr Atilano Corcuera SVD (Philippines)
Friday 3rd Week of Lent
According to the book, World Religions and Belief Systems, when a Muslim infant is born, the parents whisper to the infant, “There is only one God, Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet”. And when the baby grows older and learns how to use the hand, the child is taught how to write using the Qur-an.
Interestingly, when a Christian child begins to be aware of his/her surroundings, the parents promptly teach the child how to make beautiful eyes and clap its tiny hands; very soon the child is taught how to dance!
However, we Christians bring our children to Church for baptism. In baptism the parents surrender their child to God; and God possesses the infant by embracing the child, whispering the words, “You are mine”. The parents and godparents should be sensitive to what God whispers to their heart,“ Thank you for bringing your child to me.”
Would that as we advance in years we live up to being children of God and possessed by God by “loving the Lord God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength.”
